Scientific Terminology

Today Mrs Raj did a few scientific experiments . I learned about the 3 states of matter which are solids, liquids and gases. I also learned some scientific terminology and what they meant.

1. Condensation water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it.

2. Evaporation is defined as the process of a liquid changing into a gas. An example of evaporation is water turning into steam.

3. Ice is frozen water, a brittle transparent crystalline solid.

4. Water is a colourless, transparent, odourless, liquid which forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.

5. Steam is the vapour into which water is converted when heated, forming a white mist of minute water droplets in the air a cloud of steam.

6. Solid is firm and stable in shape; not liquid or fluid.

7. Liquid a substance that flows freely but is of constant volume, having a consistency like that of water or oil.

8. Gaseous  is a synthesis gas, containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It is a useful product but requires careful handling due to its flammability and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The gas is made by passing steam over a red-hot carbon fuel such as coke.

9. The water cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.
