Drought by Adrienne Frater SJ P3 N2 2010

Answer with full sentences
eg. Who is your teacher in Room 7?
Correct: Mrs Parker is my teacher in Room 7
Wrong: Mrs Parker

This text uses similes and metaphors as part of the figurative language.

A simile is when something is described as being ‘like’ or ‘as’ something which it is not.
eg. I flopped across my desk like a dead fish.
The author is not actually a dead fish, but it helps you to get a picture of the look and feel of a situation.

A metaphor is when something is described in that is actually is something which it is not.
eg. I’m drowning in sweat.
The author is not actually drowning, but it gives you the idea of just how much she is sweating.

  1. Find as many metaphors and similes in the text as you can and list them below.

Scientific Terminology

Today Mrs Raj did a few scientific experiments . I learned about the 3 states of matter which are solids, liquids and gases. I also learned some scientific terminology and what they meant.

1. Condensation water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it.

2. Evaporation is defined as the process of a liquid changing into a gas. An example of evaporation is water turning into steam.

8. Gaseous  is a synthesis gas, containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It is a useful product but requires careful handling due to its flammability and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The gas is made by passing steam over a red-hot carbon fuel such as coke.

9. The water cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.

AsTTLe Writing Assessment June 2015

Early this year I went to Tauranga for a funeral it was for my dad's aunt. My dad and my brother went on Monday and I went with my mum and my other brother on Tuesday. It was long, then I went to my mum’s brother’s house we stayed there for 30 minutes it was fun. Then we went to my great Nana's house, she died when I was two. At her house my dad and my uncle were sitting down talking and there was a walkway down to the beach, we went fishing we swam in the water. We looked for fish we found 2 snappers I got one of them and my brother got the other one then we bought them to my marae. We cooked them. There was more than 40 people there so we had to share the fish and the people who did not get fish got served pork bones with potato. I got fish my older brother got pork bones and potato my mum selected pork bones and potato my dad had fish and my brother had fish. Then my dad's sisters came, he was happy to see them and his dad who lives there, so then my cousins came they were from Wellington . In the morning I had to wake up at 5 am they said that all the boys had to go and ready for breakfast. Cereal or leftover dinner prepared from the previous night. Then I went to the shop with my cousins I was the only boy. Then i went back to my Nana's house for 4 minutes then I went back to the marae.
